Lights
Poor lightning will encourage the thief to choose your building. They feel safer working in the dark.

Solution: All lights should be checked regularly and burned light bulbs replaced immediately. Areas with inadequate lightning should be improved. New and more efficient light fixtures may solve any potential security problems. To save you on electricity bill, maybe motion sensor operated light fixtures will help.

Chain Link Fence
Chain Link Fencing is still common (probably due to low price) to close in a bike room, storage locker room or even complete underground parking area. The problem is thieves are breaking in with small 5" long cutting pliers.

Solution: Chain link fence must be replaced with steel bars. True, it may look like jail but it protects you and your property against unwanted visitors.

Wood Doors and Wooden Doorframes
Wooden doors are rare in underground parkades but they are almost standard on residential apartment unit. Without additional protection they are easy targets to break-ins.

Solution: There are a variety of reinforcing plates and jams available on market. As well, doorframes have to be reinforced too.

Locks and Controlled Access System
Locks range in price anywhere from $20 - $300. Low priced locks can be easily picked in a very short time. $24.95 plus tax can buy you Secrets of Lock Picking or Advanced Lock Picking Secrets. Such books are available from select Vancouver merchants.

Solution: The truth is that you get what you pay for. Higher priced locks are not only more secure but are also better quality and will last much longer.
You should also be looking into the system which is not vulnerable to a lost or stolen key. The best high security key that can not be picked or drilled can get lost and you are facing a rekeying cost.

Parkade concave mirrors
Mirrors are needed in an underground parkade or at the exit at street level just to see who is coming around the corner. Concave mirrors are not cheap and unfortunately whichever type of screw you use to secure them they still get stolen.
 |
Solution: We have found that by enclosing the mirror completely in a steel cage will prevent their easy theft. |

Additional locks on double door
Double doors are very common. Only half door is regularly used with the option to unlock the second half if necessary. Since the second door is rarely used, it is sometimes hard to lock, or locking mechanism does not offer enough protection. Or it can be intentionally left open for somebody to come back later and gain easy access on to your property.

|
Solution: Installing additional locks at least at the bottom of the second door, as well we suggest at the top of the door also, will give you the extra protection youll need against unauthorized entry. |

Automatic Door-closing Devices
When it comes to doors in general, not everyone makes sure the door locks behind him. If your door doesnt have the automatic door-closing device installed on it or if it does and the closer doesnt work properly it will be left open or unlocked too many times for comfort.

Solution: Not only for security reasons but also due to fire regulations doors should be properly closed at all the times. Good quality automatic hydraulic door-closing devices will always close the door securely without making a slamming noise. In some instances where slamming noises would not be an issue less expansive pneumatic or spring closer can be used.

Key lock boxes
Whats the point of installing the best guard plates, the best deadbolt or any other preventive measure if the key that opens your front door is within the thefts easy reach.
Truth is the Fire Department, BC Hydro, BC Tel, Cable, Elevator, just to name a few companies, most likely have their lock boxes installed at your entrance or behind the building at the entrance into the underground parking area. The problem is, the "insecurely installed" lock boxes contain the key which usually opens numerous doors. Worst of all is that fact that in many instances the box gets stolen, and then discovered days, weeks or sometimes months later by technician who cant get into your building to do his job. The damage to your property is done before you can do anything about it! Can you refuse to have a lock box installed by the various companies? It would be very inconvenient for you as well as for them to provide their services effectively.
This does not alter the fact that, lock box get hammered off the wall with hammer or simpler yet, wedged off the wall with a flat screwdriver in a matter of seconds.

Solution: The Fire Department was the first to approach this problem in a very effective way. On all new developments such boxes are now buried into the concrete. This is very effective against the type of theft mentioned above.
The problem is, most building do not have this system in place.
To protect your existing lock boxes installed on your property,
we have designed a cost effective and unique product called
"Lock Box Guard" (patent pending) that will secure ALL of
your lock boxes from being vandalized or broken into.

Postmans enterphone access
Have you ever thought about whom opens the buildings front door to your postman?
Simple answer they have the key for the front door. However, this same key opens many more front doors. It actually opens the front door on every building equipped with an enterphone access system.
Were definitely not suggesting that the postman him or she is a main cause for concern, but this key they use to gain access to your property could get lost or stolen. A skilled robber could even make copies of this valuable key!

Solution: At Nikl Services we have the answer for this problem. The only feasible solution is to use an electronic timer which makes the postmans key un-operational outside of a predetermined time period (example: Monday to Friday, 9AM to 10AM). This system is very effective, however, it would have to be agreed with Canada Post and your Postman.
