Pulling the emergency release from outside

Every garage door should have an operational emergency release in the case of power outage or some other emergency. By pulling on the emergency cord or chain at the top of the door, the door disengages from the motorized operator unit and can easily be lifted up to allow cars to exit.

Unfortunately this same emergency release is often easy pulled from outside the building. Thieves can easily open the gate, enter the underground parking and simple close gate behind them. All this can be done in about 10-15 seconds.

Solution: Access to the emergency release from outside must be prevented. We highly recommend installing aluminum plate on the gate over this area to eliminate access by unauthorized persons.

Covering the photocell from outside

The law in British Columbia as well as North America is that every overhead garage door must have this safety feature of a photocell. The function of a photocells is that it reverses the door if a car or any other obstruction is cutting the photo beam.

If the photocell is reachable from the outside, a robber can stick a piece of tape over the eye of the cell. The tape simulates an obstruction and after the first car opens the gate it will stay in the open position. Unfortunately not everyone waits for the gate to close completely behind him or her.

Solution: Access to photo cell must also be prevented with the installation of an expanded metal or aluminum plate, or Plexiglas.

Use of a stolen remote opener

It is most convenient to leave the remote opener inside the car. Problem with this practice is that it sometimes gets stolen. Owners of stolen remote opener do not always report the theft,
or even if they report the missing controller, the code doesn't get changed right away.

We recommend that remote openers definitely not be left inside any vehicle. We suggest the use of a mini key-chain remote opener, which we can provide at discounted prices if you are buying larger quantities.

If you have to change the code, you should do this the same day. Then, post a notice at the garage door that code will be changed by 8 PM. Follow up by sliding a confidential notice under each resident's doors with the new code and instructions how to make the change. We have technicians' available 24 hours to assist you.

Solution: We can introduce you to an even more advanced way to avoid the problem of stolen remote opener units is the use of small key-chain transmitters system in which every person has their own Personal ID Number Code. The PIN Code can be independently deleted out of the system without interfering with PIN Code of others. The overall expense of this system has dropped considerable and it is becoming a standard feature on all multi-user access systems.

Prying the door open

Some doors can be pryed off with an average size pry bar or simple piece of pipe. Thus, the strength of door hardware (hinges, rollers, brackets and track) is very important to prevent this type of break-in. It is also important to improve the door's dependability.

Solution: Apart from the industrial grade of so-called heavy duty hardware, additional plates should be installed on both sides of the frame to prevent prying.

Cutting the aluminum tubing

Most overhead garage doors are made of aluminum due its lightweight nature. Aluminum is soft and can easily be cut with small 14" bolt cutter. This is a quick and easy way to break in and is becoming quite common.

Solution: There are actually several ways to solve this problem. We suggest that the entire door be covered with Plexiglas or an aluminum plate. We can also provide and install ‘3/4" STEEL' tubing across the door. A better grade of steel is harder to cut, and a secure way to prevent any cutting of tubing if you are concerned about parkade ventilation.

Shorting the cable between the key box and motorized operator

The cable that connects key box with the motorized operator is sometimes exposed. By shorting the two wires, the operator will receive a signal to open the door.

Solution: Cable must be enclosed inside a metal conduit with tight connections.

Tampering with the key box

Key Box can be pried open and the micro switch activated to open the door.

Click to enlarge Solution: Covering the Key Box with a strong metal box anchored to the concrete will help. A better solution would be to change the access system. Please refer to our suggestion contained in, Use of a stolen remote opener

Using the manual hoist

This is not very common but few rolling type garage doors with opener installed on outside can be simply opened by engaging the manual hoist system. It also has to be left operational for the case of emergency, making unauthorized access easier.

Solution: Installing a locking system, which will automatically unlock in case of emergency, must be installed.

Upgrading your Parkade Gate

It is important to increase dependability of your garage door and decrease the down time and maintenance cost.Does your garage door break down often or in particularly, at night or on weekends? This could be very annoying especially if it stopped in the closed position and the emergency release doesn’t work. You have no choice but to call a door technician and usually pay overtime rates to get it working again. There are many doors installed on residential and commercial buildings that are poorly designed for the required traffic load. As a result, they break down frequently. When breakdowns occur, a technician is called out only to get door running again. He fixes the broken roller or hinge, but in a few short months, another breakdown occurs. This time it’s an another roller, spring or a cable snaps that will require fixing. From serviceman’s point of view it may not look that bad, as he will generate extra revenue from service calls and thereby create an ongoing work project. We too have qualified door technicians available 24 hours, but fixing broken down gates time and time again is not our main business. Our business is preventative maintenance. For example we would upgrade your garage door and hardware to industrial grade standards, while keeping within your budget. We guarantee that your gate will operate smoother, quieter, and not break down continually due to mechanical failure. Also, we can upgrade your motorized operator with an instant reverse delay that significantly reduces stress on the motor.Does your gate have a safety edge installed? Would you like to see warning lights?

These questions and much more can be answered by one of our representatives.
